This work is the result of research carried out for the eventful decade of 1957-1985 in Assam on firearms crimes including firearms legislation. The author has noted serious shortcomings in official firearms crimes statistic of India in general and of Assam in particular. It has been suggested that certain reformulation for an official crime statistics should, however, be replenished with survey methods of various types. Sentencing severity alone cannot be a prime controlling factor of firearms crimes. There are certain other elements also on which proper emphasis should be given which finds an ample elaboration in the book. Political offender category requires certain explanations and the author has given considerable thought to the subjects. The role of criminalogists has also been dealt with to a considerable extent. The author has tried to focus, in detail, different lacunae, loop-holes and shortcomings of the firearms legislation and criminal procedures relating to trial of such firearms offences and has recommended (or suggested) valuable radical changes in the appropriate fields of legislation for rectification. He has touched on female criminality also with reference to Verkko?s laws of sex and crime and has found it a very fertile field of study for policy formulation on ?Women and Crime.? A vivid picture regarding trend of use of different types of firearms in Assam in its longitudinal aspect emerged from the work. The work ushers a very logical and scientific new policy formulation for control of firearms and prevention of firearms crimes. This book is likely to prove of immense help to statisticians, police, legislators, political scientists, lawyers, forensic scientists, sociologist and general public alike.
