Why should Europe or the Western nations think that if the development nations come to possess nuclear weapons, they would be more ready for their use than the rest of the world? The U.N. General Assembly, on December 16, 1989, adopted a resolution declaring South Asia as a nuclear-free zone. The establishment of nuclear-free peace zone in various parts of the world is seen as a major factor in ridding the world of nuclear weapons and resultant violence. It means that the USA, the nations of old USSR,. Britain, France and China should not deploy their nuclear weapons there while the non-nuclear States of the region should not develop or produce their own nuclear arms. Over many decades the American public was hoodwinked into believing nuclear installations as safe and clean. However, of late they have discovered the enormous dangers they and their environment have been subjected to as a result of the mindless pursuit of nuclear weapons. Such irresponsible utterancess in Pakistan as ‘eating of grass till nuclear bomb has been acquired’ or ‘thousands year war’ or ‘the great attainment’ and the assistance it received from China, and the recent announcement by France to aid Pakistan’s nuclear-related energy programme are developments which cause concern. How to meet this challenge? The author sums up the position by saying that the only way India can do it is by going nuclear itself.
