However Supreme Court of India has given a verdict in the form of a directive that death sentence should be awarded in the rarest of rare cases. Mr. Hidayatullah, former Chief Justice of the Supreme Court and Vice-President of India rightly said it is not possible to select rarest of the rare cases for awarding death sentence. He asked for rethinking and for framing new policies of punishment. The role of the doctors was also emphasized. Further it has been the experience for some time that the immunities given to Diplomatic personnel are misused. To stop this misuse and in the light of the views expressed in the press from time to time it became necessary to review the existing customs and laws providing immunities.
