Manipuri is the language spoken by the Maipuris of Manipur. The language resourceful and systematic in its own way is spoken by a few lakhs of people settling in the remotest corner of India. Besides introducing the language he writer tries to study the language from a world's perspectives. Languages of the world are grouped by philologists according to genealogical classification. Linguists also make attempt to group world languages by means of typological classification. The writer follows the earlier philologists while tracing the origin on the Manipuri and grouping it into a family. Typological classification is used as a tool for trying to study in which group or type the language belongs. For this the Morphology of manipuri is discussed in detail.

 

Dr. W. Ibempishak Devi, (b. 1950) has been a good teacher and a scholar in the field of English teaching in Manipuri. She was educated in Gauhati University from where she got her M.A. in English language and Literature. A stint in the erstwhile CIEFL, Hyderabad, from where she has a PGDTE Degree sharpened her mind for Linguistics. She has a Ph.D from Manipur University. She taught undergraduate classes for more than 30 years in Govt. D.M. College of Arts, Imphal before becoming Principal of the college. While she was Head of the Dept. of English, she completed a UGC project on Manipuri Morphology, She contributed various articles to many publications. Her article on Browning has been included in 'Browning-2000' published by T.N. Publications, Chennai. She has also co-edited about 30 text-books of English in Manipur. As a Research Guide of Manipur University, she has produced two Ph.D's and other scholars are working under her. Till recently, she was Chairman of the Board of Secondary Education, Manipur.
