Theory Of Indian Music

While there have been several Sanskrit texts expounding aspects of Indian music and a few modern works dealing with its broad principles, there has been so far no book on the theory of Indian music written on a scientific basis. The present work, a pioneering treatise on the subject, is an exposition of that theory. It attempts an original investigation into some of the basic theoretical concepts such as the psychology of tunes, and the art of harmony, (the existence of which in Indian music has been a matter of serious controvery among experts) which do not find even a mention in the extent works on the subject. New conceptions, new emotions and new ideas are displacing old ones, and amalgamating East and West. Indian music will have to conform to the new state of things. The present work shows that the foundations of the Indian musical traditions are ?wide enough to take the new structure without any change in the system?.
