In this pioneering work, the author provides insight into the progress and prospects of pottery industry as developed in India and various problems faced by it. He has investigated in detail, the important aspects of the growth and development of this industry which have been responsible for its localisation at Khurja, Chunar, Chinhat and Phoolput all in Uttar Pradesh. He has examined at length the organisational structure, administrative set-up, capital involved, techniques of manufacture and packing. Transportation and marketing problems. The production trends and the cost analysis as well as the problems faced by the workers engaged in the industry, including their wage structure, working conditions and social welfare, have also been exhaustively examined. The study offers a number of useful suggestions for a more systematic and a faster development of the pottery industry. The author is of the opinion that if proper attention is paid by the Govt. by assisting the potters in the application of new techniques of manufacturer, the industry will stand on a strong footing not only in Uttar Pradesh but will also be able to serve the country?s requirements to be great extent. It can also be a potential foreign exchange earner.
