India has the largest area (23 million ha) under pulse cultivation and the highest production (14 million tonnes) of pulses in the world but in productivity (534 kg/ha) it stands at the bottom among the major pulse producing countries. The per capita availability of pulses declined drastically in the country from 75 g/day in 1959-60 to 36.6 g in 1993-94 and is much below the recommended minimum requirement of 80 g/capita/day. Due to this fact the prices of pulses in the market are increasing sharply and touching a new height every year. The situation of pulses is worst in the subsistence production system. The book is planned to deal with the various aspects of production and marketing of pulses grown in subsistence farming situations and efforts have been made to generate some valuable information for planners, policy makers, agricultural scientists, researchers, teachers, extension workers and students who are interested in formulation and execution of effective pulse production strategies.
