The present work is a contribution of original and systematic work on the location, planning and redistribution of manufacturing industries in the metropolitan city of Kanpur which is one of the foremost industrial centres in the country. This work, illustrated with maps and diagrams, consists of the detailed history of the growth and development, diversification, the area variation and temperal distribution of the numerous large scale and small scale industries with the horizontal and vertical linkages in the industrial growth along with their quantitative analyses. One of the important aspects of this work is the impact of industrialization on the standard of living of the people in the Kanpur region and the proliferation of the industrial belton the Kanpur-Lucknow Axis which is functionally allied and now expanding with leaps and bounds. It is perhaps the first attempt to analyse geographically the nature of industrial growth of a single urban centre in India especially based on extensive field work. The methods used in this work have been pioneered by the author and may be applied to the industrial geography of other cities. This work will, therefore, be of value as a case study for students of economic geography and in particular, of the geography of cities. It will also be of major interest to the administrators and general readers concerned with Kanpur?s problems of growth and change.
