Poaceae, the grass family is one of the largest and widely distributed families occupies their position in the Indian Flora, while for the erstwhile Bombay Presidency it stood second and for the State of Maharashtra it ranks first. This is economically a very important family, as it contributes for important cereals and fodders and is also useful for paper, pulp, sugar, soil-binding, lawns and essential and aromatic oils etc. Maharashtra, the legendary land of Shivaji, Gokhale and Tilak, has seen many ups and downs in its glorious and eventual history. However, an up-to-date consolidated account of its grass wealth is still lacking, a great need which will be fulfilled by the present comprehensive work. In this study 397 taxa belonging to 109 genera have been enumerated alongwith their uptodate nomenclature, generic and specific keys, local names and district-wise distribution and so also a brief introduction and illustrations etc. It is hoped that this work will generate a much better understanding of the grass wealth of the State and will be of immense use to post-graduate students in general and those of Maharashtra State in particular and to research workers and professionals like Botanists. Foresters, Ecologists, Plant Breeders, Environmentalists, Conservationists Agronomists, Agriculturists and Horticulturists etc. Its simple way of presentation and easy diagnostic keys along with many illustrations will attract one and all concerned with the subject.
