After presenting a picture of supply (production and imports) and consumption in the country against the background of the world situation briefly, it analyses the situation in the area of the study. The analysis here covers the nature of the demand for oil and points to several deficiencies in the distribution system. The hierarchy and network of the distribution system has also been presented. A methodology for assessing the demand for oil at the farm level and also at the block and district levels has been developed. At the farm level it uses both the norm method and regression estimates and the norm are derived from the data collected from sample households. The cost of diesel oil, electricity, gobar gas and wind power in lift irrigation has been assessed. The factors which determine the cost of irrigation per irrigated crop hectare have been analysed and the necessary measures which can cause its reduction discussed.
