Anglo-Lushai Relations 1890-1947

The present work is an abridged version of the author’s Doctorate thesis submitted to Manipur University in 2013. The book elaborately deals with the British contact with the Northeast tribes and administration of the Lushai Hills, known now as Mizoram. It is a descriptive study of the various impacts of the Colonial rule which results are felt till today. Though the British rule ended in 1947, the social, cultural, economic, political and religious changes in this Indo-Myanmar border state did not end there. The modern culture of the Mizo tribes is to some extent, the by-product of Colonial rule, where Christianity played a great role. The factors, processes and events as well as effects of these changes during the period from 1890-1947 are examined in details here. The author has the advantage of grabbing first hand information being brought up in a multi-tribal environment in addition to field work and case study, and as such, the book is worth reading for every type of people—students, scholars, academicians, writers and laymen. The author presents a clear historical picture of Colonial administration with its merits and demerits by analyzing the situation and carefully interpreting both the Colonial and Indian works. It is a historical, sociological and anthropological study of the Lushai (Mizo) tribes right from the pre-colonial structures till the end of Colonial rule. Dr. H. Thangtungnung (b. 1982) is the eldest son of Mr. Thonzagin and Ms. Lhingkhonei. He hails from the District town of Churachandpur, locally known as Lamka, Manipur. He earned his post-graduate degree in History and was awarded the degree of Doctor of Philosophy in History by Manipur University in 2013. Deeply interested in a writing career, he started writing since his high school days and published eight books in Paite dialect apart from several articles in local Magazines, weekly, dailies and internet sites. He has published around twelve papers in national and international journals, Conference proceedings and edited books and presented six academic papers in national seminars. He has completed two centrally funded research projects under Tribal Research Institute, Government of Manipur, Imphal. He is a life member of North East India History Association (NEIHA) and Kuki Research Forum (KRF), a member of Paite Literature Society (PLS) and Ex-Executive Member of Zomi Language and Literature Society (ZOLLS). He has been awarded Honours Award for Literature by Siamsinpawlpi (Paite Students’ Organisation), 2014, Award of Appreciation by Zogamonline, 2012 and Zogam.com Writers’ Award, 2008.
