Molluscs represent one of the largest and most diverse phyla in the entire animal kingdom. Next to the arthropods, they have the most named species in the animal kingdom. Molluscs both extinct and living compromise about 11 per cent of all animal species that have ever evolved during the entire course of earth history. The diversity of the phylum is shown by the seven known classes which are represented by the snails, mussels, oysters, clams, squids, octopuses, and scallops. Although extremely diverse, the phylum is united by a common ground plan of anatomic and morphologic similarities. The name 'mollusca' is derived from the Latin molluscus, meaning soft. Dr. Rita Rawat born 24th July, 1967 in Dehradun. She has obtained M.Sc. In Zoology in 1991 and Ph.D. in 1994 from Jadavpur University, Calcutta. She has done pioneering work in the field of Caudofoveata, Aplacophora, Polyplacophora, Monoplacophora, Bivalvia and Scaphopoda. She has authored and edited four books. She has chaired a number of sessions of different seminars and conferences.
