Plants are the basis for the Earth’s ecosystem and food web and, without them, complex animal life forms could never have evolved. They are unique amongst the euka ryotes, organism whose cells have membrane-enclosed nuclei and organelles, because they can manufacture their own food. Chlorophyll, which gives plants their green colour, enables them to use sunlight to convert water and carbon dioxide into sugar and carbohydrates-chemicals the cell uses for fuel. The study of cells, molecules and molecular reactions in plants have always been a topic of interest to biologists and biochemists. The structure and functions of molecules of plant cells and their reactions are elaborately discussed in the present volume. It will serve as a highly valuable reference tool for all concerned.
