The recent trend in Indian historiography as the majority of articles in this volume indicate, is the emphasis on micro and regional studies. These studies provide effective tools for writing better national and general histories. Eminent scholars like Jagadish Narayan Sarkar, Nishtih Ranjan Ray, Nithya Chaithanya Yati, Tarasankar Banerjee, and P.N. Chopra are among the contributors to this volume. An important aspect of the articles incorporated in this volume is that it gives a cross section of Indian culture; at least one aspect of the cultural trait of each state of India finds a place in it. The volume does full justice to the caption: ?A Panorama of Indian Culture.?
