The Book
The book Women in Indian politics: Traditions, Transitions and Transformations makes a humble endeavour to describe the position of women in Indian political landscape. It covers the voyage of Indian women in politics spanning over a century. Divided into five sections it contains a host of research articles with diversity style of scholarship which provide useful insight into the beginning of political participation among women and this participation making a move towards maturity. The five sections provide thought provoking insight into the participation of women in politics from the historical context, its present state, and women’s involvement in the regional and sectoral politics, women’s participation in demonstration politics and women in social movements and the role of media in bringing women into the ambit of politics in the country. In the present edited endeavour, the editor along with her co editor have tried to see women’s political participation from an interdisciplinary lens. The editors have tried to establish a linkage between society, culture and citizenship in the country and how changing culture with emerging organisations and institutions contribute towards bringing transitions and resulting in transformations so far as women’s visibility in politics is involved.
