The tribals of India are facing numerous problems today. Tribal population of the country is suffering from economic and social backwardness. Especially Scheduled Tribes are the poorest of the poor. An attempt has been made to document the literature on Scheduled Tribes of Uttar Pradesh and Uttaranchal so that the policy makers, planners, administrators, researchers etc. can delve deeper into several aspects of the tribals and can plan effective policies for improving their standard of life. The present work is perhaps the first of its kind. It presents not only a comprehensive view of the literature but also enhances the knowledge of researchers etc. who are keen to know the different aspects of the Scheduled Tribes. The book gives an important ethnographic information on the tribes along with brief description of the state. It includes latest statistical figures and also highlights the tribal distribution of the country both through text and maps. Useful data has been provided in the form of numerous tables through which one can get a glimpse of the Indian Tribal situation. This document is of immense value as an indispensable reference tool. It covers almost all the facets of Scheduled Tribes of Uttar Pradesh and Uttaranchal.

Sumedha Naswa (b. 1957) had been associated with Anthropological Survey of India for more than 21 years. Educated at Chandigarh, Delhi and Dehradun, she holds a masters degree in Sociology, Diploma in Library Science, Rural Development and certificate in Environmental Studies. She has contributed some articles in various journals of national repute, both in English and Hindi. Her literary pieces of stories, poems, articles etc. have been published in reputed magazines and dailies. She has also given talks on All India Radio. She is a life member of AISLIC, AGLIS and UPLA. Besides these her main contributions include: Bibliography on Andaman and Nicobar Islands. (1981); Bibliography on Himalayas (1990; Tribes of Andaman and Nicobar Islands (1999); Profiles of Rural Himalayas (1999). Her forthcoming work is on Tribals of Gujarat.
