Tribal languages of Himachal Pradesh is the second volume in the series of ?Studies in Tibeto-Himalayan Languages?. This volume consists of two parts of which this is first part. It contains a detailed structural analysis of 4 Tibeto-Himalayan dialects of the tribal region of Lahulin Himachal Pradesh.the studyof these languages has a special importance for the students of linguistics as a whole.for besides preserving linguistic elements of ancient languages which were current among the ancient tribes inhabiting these regions, these dialects present a curious amalgam of linguistic futures pertaining to Tibeto-Aryan languages of this sub-continent, rarely met with in languages of any other region. As such this volume is of great interest not only to the students of linguists but also to students who are interestedin the history and cultural anthropology of the tribal people of these Himalayan regions. Moreover it is for the first time that a detailed account of these little known languages is being presented through this volume. The languages discussed in it ae-Pattani, Tinani. Gahri and Tod. Tobe more precise about the contribution of this volume, one may saythat it is a supplement to the Linguistic Survey of India (Vol.III Part I) which is devoted to the study of the languages of this group but contains very little information about the tribal languages of these regions. It is hoped that this and the ensuing volumes of this series will fulfill the longfelt necessity of a detailed linguistic survey of the Himalayas which could not get full justice from George Grierson due to non-availability of sufficient material to him from these inaccessible Himalayan regions.
