The present socio-psychological study of university students surveys and compares the general habits of hostellers and non-hostellers, examines some problems, identifies additional facilities required by the hostellers, makes a comparison between emotional maturity and adjustment aspects of the hostellers and non-hostellers and assesses a visualises the influence of hostel life upon its residents. The UGCm the NCERT and many other government and private agencies could get guidelines to determine many policy-matters pertaining to halls of residence where students get golden opportunity to live together, interact with each other and thus build their character, mould their behaviour and learn etiquettes, manners, courtesy and the skill of conversation. When a student goes out, nothing counts so much as his skill of conversation and behaviour. No where is this process fostered in such a forceful way as in the hostels. A day-scholar is always deprived of such opportunities. However, if the hostels are not maintained well and discipline is not exercised properly, the residents may turn into anti-social elements like, brothel-visitors, drunkards, smugglers, dacoits and what not. All such problems have been highlighted in this book.
