The Indian National Movement has been the subject of a vast number of scholarly studies. In most of such studies the epic struggle had been examined too often from the national or provincial standpoint with the result that its myriad local and regional manifestations which invested it with intensity and vigour have seldom received adequate attention. To a great extent, more than elsewhere in the Andhra region, the Freedom Struggle in Godavari District has certain unique and striking features. The socio-economic profile of this region underwent a significant change on the even of the emergence of national consciousness in the country and made the region more fertile to receive and grow the seeds of national resurgence. The Godavari region became prominent for it produced not only regional or State leaders but also many outstanding national level leaders – most prominent among whom were T. Prakasam and Nyapathi Subba Rao. Another unique feature was that the women have not only actively participated in the freedom struggle but proved themselves as torch bearers of constructure programme of Gandhi. The present work on the freedom struggle in one of the coastal districts of Andhra Pradesh which provides a scholarly corrective to this tendency thereby pointing new significant trend in recent researchers, is a welcome addition to the literature on Freedom Struggle of India.
