The book is an outcome of the research work conducted by the author for his doctorate degree. This fills in the gap existing between various studies on Poverty. The main objective of the book is to find out the relationship between social structure and poverty. It may be mentioned here that most of the poverty studies have been made with single-variable approach but in the present study a multi-cariate approach has been emphasized and used tounderst and the real nature of poverty. While doing so, uni-variate approach has not been ignored. This book deals with both theoretical and empirical aspects of poverty. The problems inherent in conceptualization as well as various theories and ideologies of poverty have been discussed in detail. Various measures of Poverty and their appropriateness form an important area of enquiry of the book. The work is of special significance for the students of social science, policy-makers and researchers because it assumes that the rural poverty substantially differs from the urban poverty in terms of composition, generation and intensity. The study also concerns with the perceptions by the poor, of themselves, of their lives, and of their roles in the society.
