socio-demographic-and-health-profile-of-mine-workers
Socio-Demographic and Health Profile of Mine Workers

This book explores the occupational health risks encountered by mine workers, specifically focusing on those in sandstone mines in Karauli. It highlights the hazardous nature of mining activities and the prevalence of diseases such as silicosis and tuberculosis (TB) among workers. Significant findings indicate that mine workers often face a lack of access to safety equipment and healthcare services, despite being aware of the risks. TB emerges as a primary cause of death among families of mine workers, many of whom begin working at a young age and struggle with financial burdens and limited healthcare access. Miners commonly experience respiratory symptoms, musculoskeletal disorders (MSDs), and stress, often turning to private healthcare due to insufficient public services. Health issues frequently prompt former miners to leave the profession. The study suggests promoting affordable safety equipment, integrating occupational health into primary healthcare, providing financial assistance, and enforcing labour laws to enhance worker welfare and health outcomes. Overall, it emphasizes the urgent need for improved safety measures, healthcare access, and socioeconomic support for mine workers.

Dr. Absar Ahmad currently holds the position of Assistant Professor-cum-Junior Scientist in Statistics at the College of Veterinary Science and Animal Husbandry, Birsa Agricultural University in Ranchi.
