Poverty in North East India, A Study of Mizoram deals with the theoretical foundations and empirical evidences of poverty. It deals with the contemporary literature on poverty and includes theoretical expositions of poverty expounded by Oscar Lewis, Ragnar Nurkse, J.K. Galbraith, Amartya Sen and others. Database of poverty at the global and Indian level is also available in the book. The evidences of poverty in North East India as whole and different states of India like Rajasthan, Maharashtra, Orissa, Assam, Kerala, etc. are included in the Review of Literature. The concept and measurement of poverty, and issues connected with poverty are adequately dealt in the book The book also deals with various anti-poverty measures which have been taken up by the Government of India and these are divided between Pre-Reform and Post-Reform Measures. A first hand data and analysis of poverty in two districts of Mizoram is done by using expenditure and income variables, and also by looking the capability failures. The causes and effects of poverty are also traced by the book. It incorporates a summary of findings from the study of poor people in the selected areas, and also the policy indications deduced from such a study.

 

P.L. Ramliana (b. 1965) joined as a Lecturer at Govt. Aizawl West College in 1992, after a brief stint of service in the Accounts & Treasuries Department. He was awarded the Doctor of Philosophy in 2009. Apart from his Research work for the current publication, his additional charge as Programme Officer of the NSS (National Service Scheme) had given him the opportunity to interact with the people of different parts of rural areas in Mizoram and thereby gain knowledge and experience with the rural areas, and also build rapport with them. He is now Associate Professor of Economics, Government Aizawl West College which is affiliated to the Mizoram University. Currently he is also the Treasurer of Mizoram College Teachers Association (MCTA) at the Headquarters, Aizawl
