Nagamese is the only lingua ? franca in Nagaland which evolved for some sociolinguistic reasons in a multilingual situation amongst fourteen major tribes in the state. It originates from the great Indo-Aryan family. The present work, Nagamese: The Language of Nagaland is the first of its kind. The study deals mainly with the linguistic aspects of the language. It deals with the origin of the Nagas and the origin of the state of Nagaland in its introduction. Their original settlements, present habitation, age-old relations with the plains of Assam are also properly dealt with. The origin, evolution and importance of Nagamese are discussed thoroughly with a comparative study with the neighbouring Assamese language. It is illustrated with maps and diagrams. The study is divided into eleven chapters which are mainly concentrated in phonology, morphology and Glossory and text specimens of the language. Phonology includes three chapters containing phonemics of the language and treatment of vowels and their phonetic changes. Morphology includes eight chapters where grammatical aspects of the language are elaborated properly. An exhaustive list of vocables giving its English and Assamese meanings is also incorporated. Specimen passages of the language with transliteration in English will be a proper introduction of the language to the readers. The study is descriptive in nature.
