Living with Degrading Environment: Social Life Around a Thermal Power Plant by Ananta Kumar Biswas

The central theme of the present book is about degrading environment as the consequences of the establishment of the thermal power plant in Kolaghat of Medinipur district, West Bengal what is primarily based on my first-hand experience gathered over a decade of constant exposure to the local society and environment. At the first stage of these consequences, the local economy and social setting gets uprooted by displacement of thousands of people from their land. The affected people must be then in search of the means of restoration of their livelihood and putting the dislocated social life into an order. When I started my investigation, the situation has already entered into the second stage cantering on the environment degradation and its multifarious effects. The surrounding nature filled with green betel leaves and coconut plants lost its deep greenery, fly ash pond often get breached and over flooded the human settlements and constant exposure to air pollution by the plant caused severe health disorder of the population of all age groups beginning from childhood to old age and from pregnancy to infancy.
