LGBTQ Community: Issues and Challenges by Deena Gurung and Savita Mishra
LGBTQ is an acronym that stands for lesbian, gay, bisexual, transgender and queer. The initialism LGBTQ is intended to emphasize a diversity of sexuality and gender identity- based cultures and is sometimes used to refer to anyone who is non-heterosexual or non- cisgender. Whether or not LGBT people openly identify themselves may depend whether they live in a discriminatory environment, as well as the status of LGBT rights where one lives. This book discusses about the people from the Third Gender category which are more likely to experience intolerance, discrimination, harassment and the threat of violence due to their sexual orientation, than those that identify themselves as heterosexual. This is due to homophobia (the fear or hatred against homosexuality). Some of the factors that may reinforce homophobia on a larger scale are moral, religious and political beliefs of the dominant group.
