Covering oceanic, riverine, and lacustrine islands, the volume brings together field-based research by scholars who examine biodiversity, environmental challenges, and the ways in which island communities adapt to isolation and changing conditions. The book discusses the historical importance of islands in migration and trade, while also addressing contemporary concerns such as climate change, sea-level rise, and ecological degradation. Organized into thematic sections, it presents insights into island ecosystems, ethnographic profiles of communities, cultural practices, livelihood patterns, and development needs. By integrating ecological, cultural, and economic perspectives, the volume fills a major gap in island studies in India. Especially this publication serves as the pioneering efforts in presenting researched information about the islands of India in a single volume to researchers, students, planners, and policymakers, interested in understanding the complex relationships between environment, society, and sustainability in India’s islands.

Dr. Nilanjan Khatua is a well-known scholar in the field of Social-Cultural Anthropology.
