The Uttar Pradesh government produced its HDRs in the year 2003 and 2008 with the support of the UNDP and the then Planning Commission of India (now Niti Ayog). Both the reports constructed its indices for the years 1991, 2001 and 2005 in pursuance of the UNDP methodology. These reports presented an inter-state comparison along with an analysis of the human development status of the districts of the state. Since then, there has been no official publication of the HDR by the state, although, there has been continuous demand for the updated HDR from the academia, researchers and policy makers. The present book provides an up-to-date estimates of district-wise human development index of Uttar Pradesh, the most populated state of India. It attempts to fill the gap created by discontinuity in publication of human development report (HDR) by the State government. The book has been conceptualized to make an inter-district analysis in terms of unadjusted and inequality-adjusted human development index of Uttar Pradesh. It gives estimate of district-wise HDI and IHDI for Uttar Pradesh for the year 2015 and also providesa comparison between inequality adjusted and unadjusted HDI. The indices have been constructed following the UPHDR 2008 and UNDP-HDR 2010 methodology for enabling the estimates internationally comparable. The findings give an overview of the state’s progress on health, education and standard of living and their unequal distribution, which would help the policy makers in area specific policy interventions.
