This book titled “Health Crisis and Care in Urban India: Study of a Capital City” makes an attempt to discuss the situation of health care services and facilities, their accessibility and priority actions needed in urban health care planning. The case studies based on primary data from Bhubaneswar have been analyzed and inferences have been made accordingly. Bhubaneswar is a very fast growing city, which forms the centre of a large urban complex. The city is now a smart city in making. So this piece of work represents a model study that can be applied to other such cities. The work specially focuses on comparative studies between health care accessibility and health seeking behavior of urban formal residential areas and urban informal settlements (urban poor) as well as main stream health care services (allopathy) and complementary & alternative therapies.

About the Author

Krishna Chandra Rath (b. 1965) is a Ph.D. in Geography from Utkal University, Bhubaneswar, India. Dr. Rath also possess a Masters Degree in Rural & Regional Development Planning from Asian Institute of Technology, Bangkok, Thailand. He has also been awarded Canadian International Development Agency (CIDA) scholarship during his M. Sc from AIT, Bangkok. Dr. Rath is presently working as Associate Professor in P. G. Department of Geography, Utkal University. Dr. Rath is having around seven major research projects (funded by DST, UGC etc.), around 40 research papers published in referred international and national journals and life memberships of 20 number of various professional bodies to his credit.

Mithun Karmakar (b. 1977) is a Ph. D. in Geography from Utkal University. She also possess a Post Graduate Diploma in Remote Sensing & GIS and Certificate in Public Health Management. She is presently working as a Sr. Consultant (Monitoring & Evaluation) in Mission Directorate of National Health Mission, Govt. of Odisha. Her specialization and field of interest includes health care planning and applications of geospatial technology.
