Development with Dignity: Themes and Perspectives is a collection of selected papers presented by resource persons and delegates at the ICSSR sponsored National Seminar on Development with Dignity (November 29 & 30, 2023) organized by the Department of Sociology, The University of Burdwan, to commemorate the 35th Anniversary of the founding of the department (1988-2023). The concept of dignity is found in the Indian Constitution. The Preamble, the soul of our Constitution, introduced the concept of Fraternity that assured the individual of dignity and correlated it with unity of the nation. “Development with Dignity” is a term coined by Amit Bhaduri. His thesis was that development with dignity can be achieved only when full employment is achieved. Through their papers, the delegates and resource persons, who participated in the seminar, deliberated upon “Development with Dignity”. The result is a series of critiques of the development discourse. The book will be of interest to academics, administrators and policymakers.
