Recognizing that fertility, mortality, and migration are the primary forces shaping demographic change, the study examines their levels, trends, and differentials within an urban context that has hitherto received limited scholarly attention. Drawing upon primary data collected from 752 households encompassing Assamese and Bengali linguistic groups, the research provides an in- depth analysis of demographic and socio-economic profiles, fertility patterns in relation to bio-social correlates, family planning practices, and cultural determinants of reproductive behavior. In addition, it investigates infant and child mortality, pregnancy wastage, and the intricate interrelationship between fertility and mortality. By situating these findings within the larger framework of population studies, this work not only enriches the empirical base of demographic research in North East India but also offers valuable insights into the socio-cultural and economic dimensions influencing population dynamics in an emerging urban centre.

Dr. Kanta Chakravarty is currently serving as Assistant Registrar (Administration) at Krishna Kanta Handiqui State Open University, Assam.
