The book is a concerted attempt towards exploring the theoretical and practical approaches of the Content and Language Integrated Learning (CLIL) for the development of English as a second language incorporating the teaching of culture in the English language classroom. In particular, the book examines the various possibilities of using the Puyas (the ancient manuscripts of the Meiteis, i.e., one of the ethnic groups of Manipur, a state in Northeast India) as the main teaching material to teach English language skills and to understand culture in the schools of Manipur. This book touches upon aspects related to the interconnectedness between language and culture and hopes to give readers an insight into the pertinent role of culture in education. It explores and examines a range of issues pertaining to comprehend culture through practical deliberations in English language classrooms. It has shown fundamental ways in which the application of CLIL classrooms conditions the development of the learning of language skills and culture. ROSY YUMNAM is an Assistant Professor in the Department of English Language Education, The English and Foreign Languages University (EFLU), Shillong, India. She received her Ph.D. degree from EFLU and her M.A. degree from the University of Pune. Prior to joining EFLU, she has taught English Language and Literature in Maharashtra Academy of Engineering, Pune, Tolani Maritime Institute, Pune and Bhavan’s College, Mumbai. She has to her credit several published articles/ research papers in books and journals of national and international repute. Her research and publications address language, culture and pedagogy, teaching language skills, production of ELT materials and academic writing.
