Corruption can adversely affects the development programmes in the country. There is a close relationship between corruption and governance. As a result, corruption affects poverty by the channels reducing governance capacity such as reduces the services that are provided by the government. Though in India, both the Central and State Government are implementing a number of programmmes in rural areas for poverty alleviation, employment generation etc. but both Central and State Government are not able to reduce poverty up to the expected level due to the prevalence of corruption. Keeping this view, the book makes an attempt an assignment of various poverty alleviation programmmes and factors associated with corruption at the grassroot level in rural areas of Assam.

This book will be relevant to the policy making in the Ministry of Rural Development, Ministry of Statistics and Programmme Implementation, Department of Development of North Eastern Region (DoNER) as well the Government of Assam. Dr. Jayanta Kr. Dutta is currently the Assistant Professor in the Department of Economics of Moridhal College, Assam. He did his post graduation from the Dibrugarh University, Assam and his M.Phil from Madurai Kamaraj University, Tamilnadu. He was awarded Ph.D from Rajiv Gandhi University, Arunachal Pradesh. Dr. Dutta has been associated with the service of teaching from last nineteen years. He is also the Coordinator of Moridhal College ‘ Contact Centre under Directorate of Open and Distance Learning (DODL), Dibrugarh University. He has published more than twenty research papers or articles in various edited volumes and national and international journals and also presented more than thirty research papers in several seminars, conferences, workshops etc. He has also edited a volume of Bi-Annual Refereed Journal named Journal of Humanities and Social Science Research (ISSN 2395-5171)

 

Prof. Amitava Mitra is currently the retired Pro Vice-Chancellor and a Senior Professor in the Department of Economics, Rajiv Gandhi University, Itanagar. He did his post graduation from the Centre for Economic Studies and Planning (CESP), Jawaharlal Nehru University, New Delhi and was awarded Ph.D from Dibrugarh University, Assam. He has rendered dedicated service of teaching and research guidance in Rajiv Gandhi University and is also a top level administrator at Rajiv Gandhi University for the last twenty eight years. Prof. Mitra was the Head, Department of Economics for twelve years, Dean, Faculty of Social Sciences, Registrar (Acting), and Finance Officer (Acting) of this University. He was the Founding Coordinator of the Centre for Development Studies, RGU (2013-2015). He was also a Fulbright Fellow in 2014.

Prof. Mitra has undertaken several research and consultancy projects funded by ICSSR, New Delhi, ICRIER New Delhi, World Bank, Finance Commission, Planning Commission and Government of Arunachal Pradesh. His areas of research interest were related to environmental conservation, sustainable development, environmental valuation, tourism and ecotourism, border trade and rural development. He was a member of Technical Committee for the preparation of First Human Development Report and the First State Development Report of Arunachal Pradesh and contributed a total of three chapters. He authored several books and has to his credit more than 100 research papers published in reputed national and international journals.
