The Indian Co-operative Movement is more than 100 years old and also it is the largest one in the world. There are about 5.5 lakh different forms of co-operatives working in almost all sectors of the economy. Since independence they have been playing a very significant role in promoting agricultural and rural development and employment generation. In this process the co-operatives facilitated the emergence of Green Revolution. Recently the Government has agreed to provide Rs. 15000 crore for strengthening the co-operative banking system and further for safeguarding co-operative autonomy it introduced in Parliament the 106th Constitutional Amendment Bill.
