The volume brings together diverse perspectives to reveal the struggles and aspirations of women and marginalized communities as they navigate systems of power, conflict, and governance. The book collectively addresses critical themes such as empowerment through digital platforms, the gendered dimensions of conflict, and the politics of ethnic assertion and autonomy. It highlights how women and communities in the region continuously negotiate their identities amid challenges posed by migration, displacement, and political marginalization. Furthermore, it engages with pressing issues of governance and decentralization, examining how structures of autonomy and inclusion influence local politics and development. Beyond questions of representation, the book situates the Northeast within the broader national and global discourse on citizenship, sustainability, and justice. It sheds light on how historical neglect, ecological vulnerability, and policy frameworks have shaped the region’s contemporary realities. At its core, Beyond the Periphery calls for reimagining development through inclusivity, gender sensitivity, and participatory governance. It underscores the need to move away from the margins to center the experiences, struggles, and voices of those who have long remained peripheral to India’s developmental and political imagination.

Dr. Nipan Haloi is an Assistant Professor in the Department of Political Science at Sankardeva Mahavidyalaya, Pathalipa- har.
