agricultural-production-in-himachal-pradesh
Agricultural Production in Himachal Pradesh

This book presents a comprehensive economic analysis of crop production in Himachal Pradesh, with a focused empirical study of Chamba district. Agriculture continues to form the backbone of the Indian economy, playing a vital role in employment generation, food security and rural development. Despite its declining share in Gross Domestic Product (GDP), the sector remains crucial for sustaining livelihoods, particularly in hill states such as Himachal Pradesh, where a significant proportion of the population depends on agriculture. The book examines the structure and performance of agriculture in the state, highlighting key aspects such as landholding patterns, cropping intensity, and the production and productivity of major rabi and kharif crops. It provides a detailed analysis of cost concepts (Cost A1, A2, B and C), farm income, and the efficiency of resource utilisation across different categories of farmers—namely marginal, small and medium holdings.

Drawing upon primary data collected from 300 sample households across selected villages in Chamba district, the study explores socio-economic conditions, labour utilisation (Standard Mandays), land use patterns, livestock contributions and income diversification. It also employs statistical tools, including inter-correlation matrices, to examine relationships between key agricultural inputs such as labour, seed, fertilisers, irrigation and machinery, thereby offering valuable insights into resource optimisation.

The book further highlights the critical constraints faced by farmers, including inadequate access to credit, insufficient irrigation facilities, fragmented landholdings, limited market access, post- harvest losses and vulnerability to climatic variability. It also discusses institutional and policy interventions, including the role of government agencies, subsidies and agricultural reforms, along with the historical contributions of the Green Revolution and various committees in shaping Indian agriculture.

In addition to identifying these challenges, the book offers practical and region- specific recommendations to enhance agricultural productivity and sustainability. These include improving soil fertility management, promoting efficient water use, encouraging crop diversification, supporting high-value and off-season crops, strengthening rural infrastructure, improving market linkages, enhancing access to credit, and encouraging youth participation in agriculture.

Dr. Yogmaya Sharma, an academician and economist, is presently working as Assistant Professor of Economics at Arni University, Kathgarh, Indora, District Kangra (H.P.).
