Governments around the world are using artificial intelligence to make public services better, more efficient and deal with the complex problems that societies are facing. Artificial intelligence is being used in governance so quickly that we have not had time to develop the rules and guidelines that we need to make sure these technologies are really helping people. The book Advancing Human- Centric AI for Smart Governance is trying to fix this problem. This book gives us a plan for understanding how artificial intelligence can be used in government systems in a way that is fair, responsible and follows democratic values. It looks at all the ways artificial intelligence is being used in the public sector, such as digital public services, smart infrastructure, law enforcement, healthcare, education and taking care of the environment. The main objective of this book is to develop artificial intelligence systems used in governments that must be developed with citizens as partners, not as users. The authors look at ways to involve people in making intelligence policies ways to make sure data is governed fairly and ways for communities to give feedback on government artificial intelligence systems. They use examples from poor countries to show how these approaches can be really helpful but also how they can go wrong if we do not think about people first. This book is practical and still very thoughtful. It gives advice on policies, checklists for governance and tools to evaluate ethics that people can use in their real work. It is designed to be useful, for both academics and people who are working to make governments better. For anyone who wants to know how artificial intelligence can really help societies this book gives a vision and a believable plan.
